It’s a beautiful, powerful myth. And for some Native groups, it persists as literal truth explaining the origin of this awe-inspiring tower. Yet, geologists—armed with centuries of research and scientific tools—point to a very different (and decidedly less bear-related) explanation.
The Science of Devil’s Tower
Geologically speaking, Devil’s Tower is the result of igneous activity—volcanic processes that occurred millions of years ago. Scientists have concluded that molten rock (called magma) pushed its way up through the earth's crust and then cooled and hardened beneath the surface long before erosion eventually stripped away softer rock layers.
